Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

Writing Like You Speak Sells Online

Okay, let’s get to the truth here: nobody’s clicking “Buy Now” because your product blurb sounds like a robot spat it out after a long night at the office. You’ve seen those descriptions, stiff as a board, stuffed with nonsense like “cutting edge technology” or “unparalleled quality.” They don’t make you want to shop. They make you want to hit the back button and pretend you never landed there.

Truth is, if you want to sling stuff online, write like you’re chatting with your buddy over a beer, not like you’re pitching to a room full of suits. People vibe with real talk, and that’s what gets wallets open.

Why Stuffy Writing Tanks

Picture this: you’re scrolling, and something catches your eye. Was it a wall of formal gibberish? Hell, no. Nielsen Norman Group dropped some truth in 2019: people skim web pages, giving you about 5.59 seconds before they bounce. If your writing feels like homework, overly proper, packed with buzzwords, they’re out the door faster than you can say “enhanced functionality.” Stiff words build a fortress; casual ones roll out the welcome mat.

You CAN win the online marketing game. Statista says e-commerce raked in $5.8 trillion in 2023, with a zillion sites clawing for eyeballs. To stand out, you’ve got to be one of the small percentage of sites that slice through the clutter, and nothing cuts like a voice that feels like home. Write like you talk, and you’re not just hawking gear, you’re building trust, showing some soul, and giving folks a reason to stick around.

Real Talk Wins Every Time

Think about the slickest salesperson you know. They don’t sound like a brochure, they shoot the breeze, crack a joke, get you nodding. That’s your online playbook. Content Marketing Institute found in 2021 that 73% of people dig brands that keep it friendly and chill. Why? It’s legit. Dollar Shave Club didn’t just peddle razors in 2012, they dropped a video saying, “Our blades are f***ing great,” and bam, 27 million views later, they’re swimming in cash. No spec sheets, just raw, human swagger.

Writing like you speak knocks down walls. Swap “This optimizes your workflow” for “This keeps your day from turning into a dumpster fire.” One’s a snooze; the other’s a lifeline. It’s not about going lowbrow, it’s about hitting people where they live.

How to Pull It Off

So how do you nail this without sounding like a try-hard? First, chuck the fancy vocab. Sprout Social’s 2020 survey says 65% of folks hate brands that sound like they swallowed a dictionary. “Simple” beats “rudimentary,” “fix” trumps “ameliorate.” If it’s not something you’d say out loud, ditch it.

Throw in some questions and stories too. “Ever waste ten minutes hunting for your keys?” lands harder than “This organizes your belongings.” Questions hook ‘em, they nod, they’re in. Stories seal it. Selling a mug? “I dropped my last one mid-coffee and cursed the universe. This one’s tougher than my temper.” Beats “Durable design” any day.

Use contractions: “you’re” over “you are,” “it’s” over “it is.” Shrinks the gap. And don’t shy away from a little spice, humor, a cheeky dig, something bold. Just keep it wide-open and relatable, not snarky or obscure.

The Proof’s in the Numbers

Data doesn’t lie. HubSpot’s 2022 study showed conversational landing pages out-converted formal ones by 20%. People don’t trust faceless corps, they trust voices like theirs. Wendy’s Twitter proves it: sassy, drive-thru-style banter’s got them 3.8 million followers. They move burgers by talking smack, not listing calorie counts.

Small fries win too. Copyblogger’s 2018 case study showed a soap shop jumping sales 35% by switching “Premium hydration blend” to “This stops your skin from turning into the Sahara.” Same soap, better voice, bigger bucks.

Watch the Pitfalls

Don’t get sloppy, though. Rambling’s a buzzkill, those 5.59 seconds mean you’ve got to hit fast, not meander. And casual’s cool, but typos or lazy grammar scream you don’t give a damn. Spell “you’re” right, or you’re losing cred. Proof it, but don’t scrub out the grit.

Match your crowd too. Selling hearing aids to retirees? “Tired of yelling ‘Huh?’ at the grandkids?” works. Tech toys for 30-somethings? “Done with earbuds that crap out mid-call?” Adjust the flavor, but keep it human.

Here Are Five Things You Can Do to Write Like a Champ

First, quit pretending you’re a corporate drone.

If your product blurb sounds like it belongs in a boardroom, you’ve already lost. Write like you’d talk to your cousin, not some stuffy exec. People smell fake from a mile away, and they’ll bolt.

Second, ask questions that make ‘em squirm a little.

“Ever lose your mind looking for your phone charger?” beats a boring feature list every time. Get ‘em nodding, and they’re halfway to buying before they know it.

Third, tell a quick story that sticks.

Don’t just say “This backpack holds stuff.” Say “I stuffed this thing for a weekend hike, and it didn’t rip like my last one.” People remember stories, not specs, and they’ll buy what they remember.

Fourth, ditch the big words and keep it raw.

Nobody cares about “exquisite craftsmanship.” They want “This thing won’t fall apart on day two.” If you wouldn’t say it over tacos, don’t put it on your site.

Fifth, read it out loud and fix what sucks.

If it sounds like you’re choking on a script or tripping over ten-dollar words, rewrite it. You want it to flow like a barstool rant, not a lecture hall snooze-fest.

Wrap It Up

Writing like you speak sells online because it’s how people click, literally and figuratively. They’re not here for a seminar; they want to feel heard, maybe laugh, and definitely not yawn. Every sale starts with a spark, and real talk lights it up way better than polished fluff. So drop the formal act. Chat like they’re across the table, and watch the cash roll in. It’s not brain surgery, it’s just how we’ve been selling since forever.
