Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

Stop Looking For The Perfect Product

If you’re selling online, stop stressing over finding the perfect product. I mean it. Quit scrolling through endless supplier lists, watching those YouTube gurus who swear they’ve got the “winning” item, and chasing trends like some desperate treasure hunter. There is no holy grail product. It doesn’t exist.

It’s Not About the Product

Think about it. There are tens of millions of products out there. People buy the same thing from different sellers all the time. One seller thrives, while another selling the exact same item crashes and burns. Why? It’s not about the product. It’s about the experience. It’s about what the product means to the consumer, not the item itself.

Look, people don’t just buy things. They buy emotions. They buy identity. They buy a feeling. A candle isn’t just wax in a jar, it’s “peace and relaxation” after a long day. A $30 planner isn’t just pages and binding, it’s “I finally have my life together.” And don’t even get me started on luxury handbags. You think someone’s dropping $1,500 on a bag because it holds their stuff better? Please. It’s a status symbol. A flex. A personal reward.

The Real Key to Selling Online

The sellers who do really well don’t waste time looking for non-existent perfection. They take one of the millions of products that’s already interesting and exciting, and make it MORE interesting and exciting. They focus on selling the experience. They understand their audience. They position their products in a way that makes people want them, not just need them. Nike doesn’t just sell shoes, they sell empowerment. Starbucks doesn’t just sell coffee, they sell a daily ritual.

The Power of Presentation

In ecommerce, this matters. If you run a candle store and all your marketing talks about is “hand-poured soy wax with a cotton wick,” nobody cares. But if you say, “Light this candle and melt away the stress of the day in a wave of calming lavender,” now you’re speaking the customer’s language. A pet store isn’t just selling dog beds, they’re selling a way for people to spoil their fur babies.

Presentation changes everything. Two sellers could offer the exact same kitchen knife, but one describes it as “stainless steel, ergonomic handle, eight inches,” while the other says, “Effortlessly slice through meats and vegetables like a pro chef with this precision-forged knife.” Same product. Different experience. Which one would you buy?

The Customer Experience Matters

It’s not just about the product either. The entire customer EXPERIENCE matters. How easy is it for someone to see your product’s value? Is your store designed to be visually appealing, or does it look like a sketchy side hustle? Do your product photos look professional, or do they look like they were taken with a flip phone from 2005? Does your brand messaging make people feel connected, or is it just “Here’s a thing, buy it”?

And let’s not forget what happens after someone buys. Did you follow up? Did you make them feel like they just made the best purchase ever, or do they instantly forget about you?

Stop Chasing Trends and Start Creating Them

These things are what separates successful sellers from the ones who keep flopping, desperately switching products every few months, trying to strike gold. Stop obsessing over finding some magical product that guarantees sales. It doesn’t exist. Instead, focus on making your customers feel something when they buy from you. Sell the experience. Sell the story. Make your products mean something to them.

The people who figure this out? They don’t need to chase trends. They become the trend.

Here Are Five Things You Can Do to Stop Chasing Perfection

First, stop scrolling supplier lists like you’re panning for gold.

Seriously, put down the never-ending Alibaba search and snap out of it. There is no secret product that’ll make you rich overnight. Instead of obsessing over finding something nobody else has, pick a product that’s already proven to sell and figure out how to make it feel special. That’s how you stand out. Not by hunting for a mythical, untapped item, but by selling an experience around something people already want.

Second, rewrite your product descriptions like you actually want someone to buy.

If your listing reads like a spec sheet, congratulations, you just made your product sound about as exciting as a user manual. Nobody is emotionally moved by “high-quality stainless steel construction.” They want to hear, “This knife slices through anything like butter, so you’ll feel like a top chef even if your cooking skills stop at boiling water.” Make people picture what life looks like with your product, not just what it’s made of.

Third, fix your store before you worry about another product.

If your site looks like it was built in 2009, people aren’t sticking around, no matter how great your product is. Make sure your store doesn’t scream “shady dropshipping scam.” Clean design, real branding, pro-level product photos, and a layout that doesn’t make visitors want to claw their eyes out. If your website looks like it belongs in a pop-up ad, nothing you sell is going to work.

Fourth, act like you actually care about your customers.

If all you’re doing is taking their money and disappearing, don’t be shocked when they never come back. Follow up after they buy. Send an email that makes them feel like they made a great choice, not just another sale in your spreadsheet. A simple, “Hey, your order’s on its way, and we know you’re gonna love it” goes a long way. If you treat customers like real people instead of walking credit cards, they’ll actually want to buy from you again.

Fifth, start thinking like a brand, not just a seller.

The people who make real money online aren’t out here chasing the next hot trend every three months. They’re creating an actual business that customers connect with. Stop looking for shortcuts and start building something people actually remember. Your brand should have a voice, a personality, and a reason for people to come back. If you look like every other forgettable online store, you’re playing a losing game.

There you go. Five things you can actually do instead of wasting another week hunting for some imaginary “perfect” product. Now go make it happen.
