Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

Why Emails Don’t Get Read

You sit down, write what you think is a great email, hit send, and then… nothing. No clicks, no sales, no replies. Just silence. You start wondering if everyone on your list suddenly moved to another planet. They didn’t. They just don’t care.

And that’s not because email doesn’t work. It’s because your emails read like everyone else’s. They’re boring, predictable, and sound like they were written by a corporate intern trying not to get fired.

People don’t hate email. They hate bad email.

You Sound Like a Marketing Robot

You know those emails that start with “Hey there, valued customer!” and end with “Shop Now”? Yeah, nobody’s reading that. It’s the digital version of small talk at a timeshare meeting.

People open emails that sound like they came from an actual person. Not a “brand,” not a “team,” not “support@company.com.” If your tone feels cold or automated, you’re done before the second line.

Stop trying to sound professional and start sounding real. If you wouldn’t say it out loud, don’t type it. If you can’t picture a friend reading it without rolling their eyes, rewrite it.

Your Subject Line Is the Problem

Nobody’s reading your emails because they’re never opening them in the first place. “Exclusive Offer Inside” doesn’t work. “Limited Time Deal” doesn’t work. They’ve seen it a thousand times.

Your subject line’s only job is to get the click. That’s it. It doesn’t need to summarize the message or sound “optimized.” It just needs to make someone curious.

“Why I stopped offering free shipping.” That’s a subject line. “How I learned to fix refund nightmares.” That’s another one. They feel like something written by a human, not a script.

Your Emails Talk About You, Not Them

This one hurts, but it’s true. Most sellers write like they’re performing in front of a mirror. “We’re excited to announce…” “We’re proud to share…” “We’re thrilled to offer…” No one cares what you’re feeling. They want to know what’s in it for them.

Your emails should answer one question: “Why should I keep reading this?” Every line should earn the next one. If it doesn’t, it’s filler. Cut it.

You’re Sending Too Much, or Too Little

Some sellers blast people every day until they unsubscribe out of self-defense. Others email once every three months, and by then, everyone’s forgotten who they are. Both are wrong.

You don’t need a schedule written in stone. You need consistency. Show up often enough that people remember you, but not so often that they sigh when they see your name. It’s not about quantity; it’s about rhythm.

Stop Trying to Sell in Every Message

If every email ends in “Buy now,” people stop opening. You’re training them to ignore you. Not every message needs a sale. Sometimes you just share something interesting, or useful, or funny. Then, when you do sell, it doesn’t feel like begging.

The sellers who make email work aren’t the ones yelling about discounts. They’re the ones building trust one sentence at a time.

Five Things You Can Do Right Now

First, open your last email and delete the first sentence. It’s probably fluff. Most first lines sound like throat clearing. Start where the interest actually begins.

Second, rewrite your subject lines like you’re texting a friend. “Quick story,” “You won’t believe this refund,” “This still bugs me.” Real people talk like that.

Third, read your email out loud before you send it. If it sounds stiff, rewrite it. Nobody talks in perfect grammar, and neither should your emails.

Fourth, share something that doesn’t sell anything. A quick tip, a weird customer question, a behind-the-scenes moment. Anything that reminds readers there’s a person behind the screen.

Fifth, stop treating your list like a herd. Write like you’re talking to one person who actually matters. Because that’s how it’ll read.

Your emails don’t get ignored because email is dead. They get ignored because they feel lifeless. Bring your personality back. Drop the fake polish. Talk like a human being, and people will start acting like there’s one on the other end.

That’s how you go from “spam folder” to “I actually read every one of these.”
