Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

What’s A B Testing All About

Ever fired off an email campaign and felt like you’re firing darts blindfolded after three margaritas? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Email marketing without testing is like baking without measuring: sometimes edible, usually questionable, always risky. If you’re tired of your emails belly-flopping into inbox oblivion, it’s time to talk about your new best friend, A/B testing.

What Exactly is A/B Testing?

First things first, let’s strip away all the jargon. A/B testing is basically your email’s dating coach, giving you honest feedback before you embarrass yourself in front of the whole internet. Imagine you’ve got two outfits: one that screams “I’m classy,” the other yelling, “I party like it’s spring break ’99!” You don’t know which one’s going to impress your date, so you ask your best friends. They pick for you, and boom, instant confidence. That’s exactly what A/B testing does, only your date is a crowd of unpredictable subscribers, and the outfits are subject lines or call-to-action buttons.

How It Actually Works

Using an email platform like Mailchimp, you effortlessly send two versions of an email to a small slice of your list. Half your test group sees “Last Chance to Save!”; the other half sees “Grab This Deal Now!” After about 24 hours of nail-biting anticipation, you peek at the results and see which subject line turned heads and inspired action. It’s simple, brilliant, and a little addicting once you start.

Why Guessing is a Terrible Idea

Now, the real magic of A/B testing is discovering things you never expected. I mean, you might assume your subscribers prefer subtle, classy subject lines like, “Please Enjoy This Discount,” but in reality, they want to be shouted at: “Yo, Click NOW!” Without testing, you’re guessing. Guessing in marketing is like guessing your way through surgery: messy, expensive, and guaranteed to annoy someone.

But hey, just testing isn’t enough. You’ve gotta test smart. The secret sauce here is testing ONE thing at a time. This bears repeating because marketers often get overexcited and start testing everything at once, creating chaos instead of clarity. Imagine you test different subject lines, button text, images, and calls to action all in one go. How would you ever know which single element drove results? Keep it simple. One test at a time.

Size Matters: Choose Your Test Audience Wisely

Another pro tip: Make sure your audience segments are large enough to get statistically relevant results. Testing on five or ten subscribers won’t give you actionable insights. Mailchimp recommends starting with at least a few hundred subscribers to ensure accuracy.

So, why bother with A/B testing at all? Because guesswork doesn’t cut it anymore. Customers are savvy, inboxes are overflowing, and attention spans are shorter than ever. Every email you send counts. By regularly conducting simple A/B tests, you’re continually learning about your audience, what they care about, what motivates them, and what makes them click. It’s like having a direct conversation with your subscribers, without the awkward silence.

Plus, beyond boosting open rates and clicks, A/B testing also helps you build long-term strategies based on genuine customer preferences, not assumptions. You start understanding trends, customer behaviors, and subtle details, like whether your audience loves urgency (“Ends tonight!”) or prefers a gentler nudge (“Don’t miss out!”). The insights you gain aren’t just momentarily useful; they’re invaluable pieces of intelligence you can leverage across your entire marketing strategy.

Five Ways to Start Testing Right Now

Alright, enough theory. Let’s get practical. Here are five genuinely useful ways to kickstart your A/B testing adventure right now:

First, pull together a killer email you’ve been proud of in the past. Now make an intentionally ridiculous variant with a wild subject line (like “This Email May Change Your Life, or Not”) and see if your audience surprises you. Spoiler: they probably will.

Second, segment your subscribers into meaningful groups; maybe split by new versus longtime subscribers or dog-lovers versus cat-lovers (I won’t judge). Test messages that directly speak to those segments. You’ll soon learn who loves you, who tolerates you, and who secretly wants to unsubscribe.

Third, deliberately test the opposite of what you assume works. If you always go short, try long and conversational. If you’re formal, write like you’re texting your best friend at 2 a.m. Weirdly enough, people love weird, so get weird.

Fourth, take your highest-performing email from last month and run it against itself with a tiny tweak. Swap the color of a button, use emojis like it’s 2010 again, or just change the greeting from “Hey” to “Howdy partner!” Micro-tests can yield macro-wins.

Fifth, schedule a monthly A/B test day where your entire team (or just you and your coffee) brainstorm crazy tests. Turn it into a creative ritual with snacks, fun music, or that aforementioned coffee-tequila. It keeps testing fresh and makes you look forward to your next big insight.

Marketing without testing is guessing, and guessing is amateur hour. If you’re serious about turning subscribers into fans, fans into customers, and customers into your unofficial hype squad, A/B testing isn’t just optional; it’s mandatory. It’s the difference between being a casual email sender and a downright legendary marketer. So, go forth and test like your marketing reputation depends on it, because frankly, it does.
