Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

What to Sell Online: Ignore the Boring

You walk around a department store, you’re gonna see an entire aisle dedicated to toasters at some point in your journey. Like, how many different ways do we need to heat bread? That’s exactly what happens online too. People selling the same old boring stuff, thinking they’re gonna make it big. Spoiler alert, they won’t. If you’re trying to figure out what to sell online, the last thing you should do is jump into an oversaturated market with products everybody already owns.

Floor mats, cookware, phone chargers, wall clocks. Boring. Not because they’re useless, but because they’re everywhere. You’re competing with giant retailers, bargain bin prices, and about a million other sellers who’ve all had the same “genius” idea. That’s like opening a pizza shop in a town that already has fifty of them. Even if your pizza’s amazing, nobody’s gonna notice.

People Buy What They Want, Not Just What They Need

The real move? Find products people want, not just stuff they need. There’s a big difference. People need a frying pan, but they want a cast iron skillet that makes them feel like a professional chef. They need a watch, but they want one that makes them look classy, important, or maybe like they know something about fine craftsmanship. Needs are practical, but wants? Wants are emotional. That’s where the money is.

Stop Playing It Safe and Find a Niche

This is where a lot of people mess up. They pick a product because they think it’s a safe bet, but “safe” usually means boring. You don’t wanna be selling the same generic junk as everyone else. You wanna find something with personality, something that stands out. Think about niche markets. If you’re selling to adventurers, don’t just sell camping gear, sell ultralight tents for hardcore hikers who count every ounce in their backpacks. If you’re into home decor, don’t just sell candles, sell artisanal, hand-poured soy candles that smell like a fancy spa. The more specific, the better.

People Buy Feelings, Not Just Products

Here’s another mistake; thinking people buy logically. They don’t. People buy based on feelings, even when they think they’re being practical. Someone shopping for a telescope isn’t thinking, “I need this to function at 100x magnification.” They’re thinking, “I wanna look at the stars and feel like an explorer.” Someone buying a metal detector isn’t thinking about its technical specs, they’re imagining themselves digging up treasure on the beach. That’s the kind of excitement you wanna tap into.

Your Copy Should Sell an Experience, Not Just a Product

So let’s talk about the copy you’re using to sell. If you’re describing your product like a factory instruction manual, you’ve already lost. “Our candles are made from premium wax using a state-of-the-art process” is just noise. Try this instead, “Light this candle, take a deep breath, and feel like you just walked into a luxury spa.” See the difference? One tells you facts, the other sells an experience.

Find Something Unique and Actually Interesting

Overall, the secret to picking the right product is ignoring the stuff everybody else is selling and focusing on what actually excites people. Find something unique, something that makes people feel something, and you’ll have a much easier time getting customers. The world doesn’t need another generic phone charger. But a phone charger that doubles as a sleek nightstand organizer with a built-in speaker? Now we’re talking.

Here Are Five Things You Can Do to Sell the Right Products Online

First, go to any big online retailer and search for “best-selling products.”

Now, cross all of those off your list. If it’s already everywhere, it’s not your golden ticket. Instead of joining the thousands of people selling the same thing, start looking at subcultures, hobbies, or niche interests that actually have passionate buyers. Find a product that makes someone excited, not just something they throw in their cart out of necessity.

Second, check how easy it is to actually make money on a product.

Just because something looks cool doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. If you can only mark it up by a couple of bucks, it’s not worth it. Look at costs, check the competition, and make sure you’re not selling something so generic that the only way to compete is by lowering your price until you hate your life.

Third, test your idea before going all in.

Don’t buy a thousand units of anything until you know people actually want it. Put up a simple product page, run a preorder, or sell a small batch first. If nobody’s biting, you just saved yourself a warehouse full of stuff nobody wants. If they are, congrats, you just found proof that your idea has legs.

Fourth, stop writing product descriptions like you’re submitting a science report.

Nobody gets excited reading, “This premium stainless steel mug features double-wall insulation.” Try something that actually makes people picture using it. “Keeps your coffee hot for hours, even when your morning meeting drags on forever.” Sell the experience, not just the specs.

Fifth, take your own advice and avoid the boring stuff.

If your first product idea makes you yawn, imagine how your customers will feel. Selling something just because you think it’s a safe bet is how you end up frustrated with a pile of unsold inventory. Find a product that’s interesting, different, and actually fun to sell. If you’re excited about it, your customers will be too.

If you actually do these five things, you’ll save yourself a ton of frustration and avoid becoming just another forgettable online store. Selling the right product isn’t about luck. It’s about choosing something people actually want, something that stands out, and something that makes them feel something. Skip the boring stuff, test before you commit, and write copy that makes people excited to buy. Do that and you won’t just be another seller. You’ll be the one actually making sales.
