Successful Business Owners Know HOW and WHY Things Work

Welcome to How and Why.

Site Templates – Should You Use Them?

Here’s something that’s quietly killing eCommerce businesses before they even get off the ground. Pre-designed website templates. You know the ones. They look nice, promise an easy setup, and make you think you’re just a few clicks away from a flood of sales. And yet, there are tens of thousands of these cookie-cutter sites floating around, making exactly zero dollars. Why? Because easy.

The “Easy” Trap

And if you’ve been paying attention to anything I’ve ever said in my podcasts, articles, books, workshops, blog posts, or courses, you already know the rule. Whenever somebody tells you that anything in business is easy, they’re lying. They just want your money.

Saying something’s easy is like having a master key to every wallet on the planet. And because people want easy, every day more and more folks get suckered into thinking they can grab a pre-designed website template, toss in some products, and boom, instant success.

No. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

The Reality of eCommerce

ECommerce is retail marketing, plain and simple. Sure, some of it’s based in technology. You need a website, payment processing, and all that good stuff. But the vast majority of success in eCommerce comes down to psychology. Marketing is psychology.

If you don’t understand the psychology behind retail marketing, you’re just throwing products into the void and hoping somebody cares. That’s not a strategy. That’s a donation.

If you don’t understand how retail psychology works, you need to find someone who does and is actually willing to teach you. That’s not easy either because there are only a handful of people in this industry who are legit. You can count me in that group. And before you roll your eyes, let me prove why this matters.

Understanding Your Demographics

Take just one core concept in eCommerce. Demographics. You’ve probably never heard that word from one of those online guru clowns who love throwing around words like automation, passive income, and easy.

That’s because they don’t actually understand this stuff. And even if they did, they’d never teach it to you. The second you actually know what you’re doing, you don’t need their overpriced tools, apps, and so-called systems.

So let’s break this down.

It’s not enough to just put products on a website with random pretty pictures. That’s amateur hour. You need to know exactly who’s buying those products and why. Two reasons. First, you can’t successfully sell the same product to every age and gender group at the same time.

No professional marketer even tries. Second, different demographics respond to different styles of marketing. If you don’t tailor your store’s messaging, design, and branding to match the buying habits of your target audience, you’re making your life ten times harder.

This means you need to do a little digging. Who’s buying your product the most? What age group? What gender? What kind of messaging and visuals make that group feel comfortable enough to buy? If you don’t know the answers to those questions, your store’s just sitting there waiting to fail.

Why Templates Don’t Work Straight Out of the Box

I know that sounds complicated. It really isn’t. Running a business isn’t easy, but this stuff isn’t rocket science either. It’s just about learning the details like anything else. And here’s where we get back to website templates.

You’ll never find a pre-designed eCommerce template that’s already built to match both the products you sell and the expectations of the demographic that buys them the most. These fancy pre-made templates are built by graphic designers. Graphic designers aren’t retail marketers. They’re graphic designers. Their job is to make things look nice, not to optimize them for sales.

Now, I’m not saying templates are bad. You should absolutely use one because building a site from scratch is a nightmare. But no matter what template you pick, it’ll need to be modified. The layout, the visuals, the typography, the messaging, all of it needs to be adjusted to match what your target customers expect to see.

The Difference Between Hobbyists and Business Owners

So when you see those happy, bubbly people on TV and YouTube bouncing around saying things like, “I just built a professional website in ten minutes,” understand that they’re not talking to business owners. They’re talking to hobbyists. They’re talking to people who just want to put a website on the internet for fun. That has nothing to do with actually running a profitable store.

Templates are OK. Using them straight out of the box isn’t.

Here Are Five Ways To Avoid Useless Templates

First, stop thinking templates are enough.

Grabbing a pre-made site and swapping out images isn’t “building a store,” it’s setting yourself up for failure. Your site needs to be designed for the people who’ll actually buy from you, not just look pretty. Start with your target audience first, then build a site that speaks directly to them.

Second, learn the basics of retail psychology.

This isn’t rocket science, and you don’t need to pay some overpriced agency to figure it out for you. Look at what successful stores in your niche are doing. Study how they structure their sites, how they lay out product pages, and what their checkout process looks like. Take notes and apply what works.

Third, focus on your store’s branding and identity.

If your website looks like every other generic online shop, you are already losing. Your store needs a distinct style, a voice, and a feel that makes it stand out. Think about the brands you remember. There is a reason they stick. Colors, fonts, product images, and even the way you write descriptions all play a role in making your store look like a real business instead of some forgettable drop in the ocean. Make it unique, make it professional, and make sure it actually connects with your customers.

Fourth, learn what makes people buy.

A website isn’t just about looking good, it’s about making people pull out their wallets. Learn how real buyers think. Read up on consumer psychology, pay attention to what makes you hit that “buy” button, and apply it to your own business. Look at top-selling stores in your niche and figure out why they work. It’s not magic, it’s science, and once you understand it, you’ll stop guessing and start making real money.

Fifth, get it right before you launch.

Your site is not something you throw online and fix later. Every detail needs to be researched, planned, and fully completed before you go live. That means a strong design, clear messaging, and a site structure that makes sense for your customers. Search engines and shoppers both hate a sloppy, unfinished store. If you launch before it is ready, you are setting yourself up for failure. Do the work upfront so your store is built to succeed from day one.
